Customer Reviews
PROS:
  • The AKG K 702 headphones offer a super comfy, over-the-ear design; they sound great at home and with iPods, and come with a detachable headphone cable.
  • The 702s are identical to the 701s except that the pads on the 02s are thicker which allows a more “around the head” speaker-like experience with regards to soundstage…..The 702s also have a detachable cable and do not come with the little stand that is supplied with the 701s…No biggie…..Now, Regarding the sound….I have as my point of reference Sennheiser 600s….so, in comparison, the 702s sound is much more defined and articulate which allows you to hear deeper into the music then the sort of sweet tho great sounding Senn 600s….I use my 702s with an Onkyo DX-7555 reference CD Player, and a Oppo DV 970HD player, along with a recent edtion of the now discontinued Headroom MAX headphone amp…..so, I am getting some serious Hi-end input into these cans and they dont disappoint…..I will tell u, should u decide to buy, that u must let these phones have at least 100 hours of burn in so that the drivers relax, and until this is accompished these cans will sound BRIGHT and without a lot of bass extention, but as the drivers begin to relax, then the glorius sound they provide just gets better and better.
  • I’ve worked in TV broadcasting since 1997.Lately I’ve been forced to consider the necessity of doing much of my work on headphones using VRM (virtual reference monitoring). Obviously to work accurately with the VRM software/hardware I need the most neutral-sounding headphones that I can afford. I used these headphones for several hours a day with various devices over a seven-day period. Initially I was disappointed. The sound seemed somewhat anaemic, lacking in warmth and I had to strain to hear bass detail even on heavy electronic music and films with big explosions. By the end of the week the frequency response seemed to have levelled out and I was becoming more satisfied with the clarity and detail. I could hear flaws and crudities in television sound production (which is the level of clarity that I require) and music was becoming more pleasurable. The headphones were “burning in”, or so I thought. The headphones had been training my ears to become more sensitive to low-frequency detail!

CONS:
  • The AKG K 702 headphones don’t come with a travel bag or storage case.
  • We’ve put close to 80+ burn in hours on these so far, and have seen a noticeable change in audio reference. I’ve read that a solid 300 hours is needed in order to get the true performance of these phones. When they were pulled out of the box they sounded quite muddled. The mids were very held back. Vocals were forward but not quite where they should have been. I’ve seen a lot about the lacking bass of the K 702 and found that out of the box the bass was “noticeable”. I’m also a very big fan of 1/4 termination instead of the 3.5 on the cord. I was disappointed to see it had a 3.5 to 1/4 adapter screwed on it.After burn in mids have opened up exponetially. Guitars, horns, etc are much more forward. To me it seems the vocals and bass have fallen off since. There is virtually no umph in the bass at all.
  • For me these a double-edged sword. They are the first decent cans that I actually find comfy – having big jug-ears ! At 9.5cms in diameter, and perfectly round, they actually completely surround my ears, rather than touching them. Nice.My main issue is that they are literally, 100% plastic. Very light, but very fragile and flimsy. These are for keeping on a stand next to your listening chair. They are NOT for throwing around in a studio, or taking on a road trip. I doubt they’d survive a drop onto a carpeted floor to be honest.
